Facing Standards

Flange Face
Types & Finishes

The face type determines gasket compatibility and sealing performance. We supply all standard ASME facing types plus special custom designs.

Standard Face Types

RF

Raised Face

Most common ASME face type. A raised circular area around the bore where the gasket sits. Works with flat, spiral wound, and ring gaskets. Suitable for most industrial applications.

FF

Flat Face

Entire flange face is flat. Required when mating with cast iron or non-metallic flanges to prevent face cracking under bolt load. Uses full-face gaskets spanning all bolt holes.

RTJ

Ring Type Joint

Machined groove accepts oval or octagonal metal ring gaskets. Creates high-integrity metal-to-metal seal for high-pressure, high-temperature services. Preferred in refineries and HPHT.

M&F

Male & Female

One flange has a raised male face, the matching flange has a recessed female face. Gasket is confined and self-centering. Used in pumps, compressors, and lined equipment.

T&G

Tongue & Groove

Tongue projects into a matching groove on the mating flange, fully confining the gasket. Provides excellent sealing and gasket location control. Available in large and small variants.

Special Facing Designs

Recessed Face

Recessed bore area for specific gasket configurations in heat exchangers and shell-and-tube applications.

O-Ring Groove Face

Machined groove accommodates O-ring seals for gas-tight applications requiring elastomeric sealing.

Grooved Face (Mechanical Coupling)

Circumferential grooves machined on pipe ends for Victaulic-style mechanical coupling systems.

Insulated / Lined Face

PTFE, rubber, or other lining applied to the flange face for chemical resistance and electrical isolation.

Facing Finishes

Serrated / Spiral Serrated

Stock finish — concentric or spiral grooves machined at 125–250 AARH. Provides positive grip on soft gaskets. Default finish per ASME B16.5.

Smooth / Mirror Finish

Finish ≤63 AARH. Required for ring joint grooves, metallic gaskets, and special applications where precision contact is critical.

Cold Water / Machined Finish

125–250 AARH machined finish for standard industrial flanges. Provides proper gasket seating without excessive surface roughness.

FAQ

Frequently Asked
Questions

Answers to the most common questions about ASME B16.5 flanges — optimized for search engines and AI assistants.

ASME B16.5 is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers standard for Pipe Flanges and Flanged Fittings, covering NPS ½ through NPS 24. It specifies dimensions, materials, pressure-temperature ratings (Classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500), tolerances, markings, and testing requirements. For larger sizes (NPS 26 and above), ASME B16.47 applies.
A Slip On Flange (SOF/SORF) slides over the pipe OD and is fillet-welded both inside and outside. It is easier to install and lower cost, suitable for moderate pressure services (Class 150–600). A Weld Neck Flange (WNF/WNRF) has a long tapered hub that is butt-welded to the pipe, providing superior strength, excellent stress distribution, and is preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature, and cyclic loading applications across all classes (150–2500).
ASME B16.5 defines six pressure classes: 150#, 300#, 600#, 900#, 1500#, and 2500#. These are not static pressure ratings — the actual allowable pressure at a given temperature depends on the material group. For example, a Class 150# A105 carbon steel flange is rated at 285 PSI at 38°C but reduces as temperature rises. Higher classes (900#, 1500#, 2500#) are used for high-pressure services such as oil & gas wellheads, HPHT applications, and steam service.
A Raised Face (RF) flange has a raised circular seating area around the bore where a flat, spiral wound, or semi-metallic gasket sits. It is the most common face type and suitable for most standard industrial applications. A Ring Type Joint (RTJ) flange has a precision-machined groove into which an oval or octagonal metal ring gasket is compressed to create a high-integrity metal-to-metal seal. RTJ is preferred for high-pressure (Class 600 and above), high-temperature, and sour service applications in refineries and offshore facilities.
A Spectacle Blind Flange (also called a Figure 8 Blank) is a single steel plate combining a solid disc (blind) and an open ring (spacer) connected by a web, giving it the appearance of figure-8 spectacles. It is installed between two flanges and rotated to either isolate (blind in-line) or allow flow (ring in-line). It is commonly used for pipeline isolation during maintenance, shutdown operations, and pigging. For larger bore sizes where a single-piece spectacle is too heavy, separate Spade (blind paddle) and Spacer (ring paddle) components are used instead.
A Nipoflange (Nipolet Flange) is a combined fitting that integrates a Nipolet — a self-reinforcing branch outlet fitting — with a flanged end. It is welded directly onto a run pipe to create a flanged branch connection. This eliminates the need for separate elbow fittings and reduces the total number of weld joints, lowering the risk of leaks. Nipoflanges are commonly used in high-pressure oil & gas, petrochemical, and power generation piping headers.
ASME B16.5 flanges are available in a wide range of ASTM/ASME certified materials including: Carbon Steel (A105, A350 LF2/LF3, A694), Stainless Steel (304/304L, 316/316L, 321, 347, 310, 317, 904L), Alloy Steel (F5, F9, F11, F22, F91), Duplex Stainless Steel (UNS S31803/S32205), Super Duplex (S32750/S32760), Nickel Alloys (Inconel 600/625/718, Incoloy 800/825), Monel (400, K500), Hastelloy (C-22, C-276, B-2, B-3), Copper Nickel (90/10, 70/30), Titanium (Grade 2, Grade 5), Alloy 20, and SMO 254.
ASME B16.5 covers flanges from NPS ½ inch (DN 15, approximately 21mm OD) to NPS 24 inch (DN 600, approximately 610mm OD). For larger sizes, ASME B16.47 applies: Series A (formerly MSS SP-44) covers NPS 26 to NPS 60, and Series B (formerly API 605) also covers NPS 26 to NPS 60 with different drilling patterns. We supply both B16.5 and B16.47 ranges, including large diameter custom flanges.
Standard documentation includes EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports (MTRs) with chemical composition and mechanical properties, dimensional inspection report, heat treatment certificate (if applicable), hydrotest certificate, and packaging/shipping documents. Optional documents include EN 10204 3.2 MTR (witnessed by TPI), NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 compliance, PMI (Positive Material Identification) report, Charpy impact test results, and third-party inspection certificates from Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's, SGS, IRS, or client-nominated agencies.
A Long Weld Neck (LWN) flange, also called a Nozzle Flange, has an extended hub that projects beyond the standard Weld Neck length. The hub functions as a nozzle stub, making it ideal for connection directly to pressure vessels, columns, heat exchangers, and storage tanks. It provides a clean, reinforced connection without requiring a separate stub pipe. LWN flanges are commonly specified by process engineers in ASME VIII vessel design, particularly for small-bore nozzle connections.
